A longitudinal study of voice before and after phonosurgery for removal of a polyp

Abstract: The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the acoustic parameters, perceptual estimation, and self-estimation of voice before, 1 month after, and 6 years after surgical removal of a vocal fold polyp. Subjects were five male patients who came to the Phoniatric Clinic because of breathiness. For all patients, a polyp of one vocal fold was diagnosed. The operation was performed using cold instruments based on the principles of contemporary phonosurgery aiming maximally at preserving the phonatory bridg… Show more

“…However, they showed a worsening trend in subsequent years, likely due to a resumption of abusive vocal behaviors. 53 In these cases, behavioral treatment could have represented an important difference. Speech therapy after vocal polyp surgery to restore vocal behavior is also considered essential by Gökcan et al, 48 as well as absolute vocal rest for 7 days and relative rest for 3 to 6 weeks.…”

“…Some studies have demonstrated no significant differences in f0 when comparing pre- and post-treatment recordings, 23,24,3338 nor between normal subjects and those with phonotraumatic lesions. 35,36 Conversely, others have reported either increased 25,39,40 or decreased 24,41 f0 values for patients with nodules or polyps relative to normal subjects and/or following surgery.…”

“…32 In a similar vein, empirical studies regarding the association of average f0 with phonotraumatic lesions have provided inconsistent results using in-clinic, short-duration measurements. Some studies have demonstrated no significant differences in f0 when comparing pre-and posttreatment recordings 23,24,[33][34][35][36][37][38] or between normal subjects and those with phonotraumatic lesions. 35,36 Conversely, others have reported either increased 25,39,40 or decreased 24,41 f0 values for patients with nodules or polyps relative to normal subjects and/or following surgery.…”

“…12 Stajner-Katusic et al showed significant improvement in the variables investigated and improved patient's satisfaction with their vocal health after the surgery. 16 Srirompotong et al reported small vocal polyp that completely resolved using conservative treatment. 17 Not every case of polyp requires surgical removal.…”
