In fifth generation wireless networks, the escalating teletraffic and energy consumption has necessitated the development of green communication techniques in order to further enhance both the system's spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. In the past few years, the novel index modulation (IM) has emerged as a promising technology that is widely employed in wireless communications. In this paper, we present a survey on IM in order to provide the readers with a better understanding of its principles, advantages, and potential applications. We start with a comprehensive literature review, where the concept of IM is introduced, and various existing IM schemes are classified according to their signal domains, including the frequency domain, spatial domain, time domain and channel domain. Then the principles of different IM-aided systems are detailed, where the transceiver design is illustrated, followed by descriptions of typical systems and corresponding performance evaluation. A range of challenges and open issues on IM are discussed before we conclude this survey.

This paper introduces the concept of spatial and media-based modulated (SMBM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as a potential candidate for highly mobile next generation beyond 5G (B5G) wireless communications. The proposed SMBM-OFDM technique utilizes not only the transmit antenna and channel state indices but also OFDM subcarriers to improve the system performance under high mobility. In addition, this study sheds light on challenging fast time-varying channel estimation problem of MBM-based systems by using the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) approach due to its optimality to investigate the achievable system performance with the aid of basis expansion modeling. The minimum lower bound on the channel estimation error (Bayesian Cramer-Rao bound) is derived theoretically and shown to be attainable by the considered LMMSE estimator. Moreover, symbol detection performance is provided for different modulation types and higher mobile velocities. Simulation results demonstrate that SMBM-OFDM system under high mobility is able to provide around 12-dB performance gains in terms of both channel estimation and symbol detection error compared to conventional spatial modulation (SM)-OFDM systems without MBM. The presented framework is important due to addressing the high mobility support of SMBM-OFDM systems for B5G wireless communications in terms of achievable channel estimation and data detection performance.

In this article, three mirror activation pattern (MAP) selection techniques are used to improve the performance of energy-efficient hexagonal quadrature amplitude modulation (HQAM) aided media-based modulation (MBM) system called HMBM. These three MAP selection (MS) aided HQAM techniques: (i) capacity-optimized MS-based HMBM (CMS-HMBM) scheme, (ii) MAP correlation (MC) aided MS-based HMBM (MMS-HMBM) scheme, (iii) Euclidean distance (ED) based MS aided HMBM (EMS-HMBM) scheme. MBM technique, one of the newest and most competitive candidates of the index modulation family, increases spectral efficiency linearly and significantly improves error performance. When MS techniques are integrated into telecommunication techniques, they significantly increase the performance of the system. Extensive computer simulations with Monte Carlo for the considered systems are performed on Rayleigh fading channels. The suggested system offers superior error performance than the conventional MBM scheme since it incorporates CMS, MMS, and EMS techniques. Additionally, the suggested new method offers greater energy efficiency than M-QAM constellation schemes since HQAM constellation schemes are by their very nature high energy efficiency. It is shown that the proposed CMS-HMBM, MMS-HMBM, and EMS-HMBM systems provide better error performance than capacity-optimized antenna selection (COAS) aided hexagonal spatial modulation (COAS-HSM), antenna correlation-based AS aided HSM (ACAS-HSM), Euclidean distance optimized AS aided HSM (EDAS-HSM), SM, and MBM systems for the same spectral efficiency. The suggested systems are envisaged for usage in sixth-generation and later wireless networks because of their high performance provided by the CMS, MMS, and EMS methods in the proposed system and the high spectral efficiency provided by the HMBM approach.
