A low-cost lead-acid battery with high specific-energy

Abstract: Abstract. Lightweight grids for lead-acid battery grids have been prepared from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) copolymer followed by coating with lead. Subsequently, the grids have been electrochemically coated with a conductive and corrosion-resistant layer of polyaniline. These grids are about 75% lighter than those employed in conventional lead-acid batteries. Commercial-grade 6V/3⋅5Ah (C 20 -rate) lead-acid batteries have been assembled and characterized employing positive and negative plates consti… Show more

“…Although, it was claimed that the specific energy could be equal to 41.2 Wh kg -1 by applying a discharging voltage of 1 V (Table 1), higher than those of conventional lead-acid batteries and VRFBs. [71,72] They rationalized the observed low voltage and energy efficiency to the insufficient mass transfer and low catalytic activity of the air electrode, but this attempt has triggered the research on bifunctional cathode electrocatalysts in not only VAFBs but also ZAFBs and LAFBs. Recently, a VAFB was fabricated with a two-layered cathode composed of one gas diffusion electrode (GDE) layer supporting Pt/C catalyst for discharging and another IrO 2 modified graphite felt layer for charging.…”

“…Lightweight grids for lead-acid batteries have been prepared from polymers coated with lead (Martha et al 2006). Corrosion protection of these coatings at both electrodes is particularly important, it was afforded by coating with PANI resulting in batteries with improved gravimetric energy density and high rate capability.…”

“…In this prototype, a set of two NickelMetal Hydride (Ni-MH) (12 V/2 A) batteries were selected for propelling HEV system [Gao et al, 2002]. Algorithm as shown in Figure 12 was realized for implementing the required strategy to control the Hybrid Electric Vehicle [Martha et al, 2006].…”
