A Low VSWR 2SB Schottky Receiver

Abstract: A novel high performance waveguide integrated sideband separating (2SB) Schottky receiver operating in the 320-360 GHz band is presented. The unique receiver design is based on a core of two subharmonic Schottky diode mixers with embedded LNA's with a minimum noise figure of 1.8 dB, fed by LO and RF quadrature hybrids. At room temperature, a typical receiver SSB noise temperature of 3000 K is measured over most of the band reaching a minimum of 2700 K, with only 4 mW of LO power. The sideband ratio SBR is typi… Show more

“…The 3 dB coupler or hybrid is a special case of the directional coupler that provides equal power division/combination and 90 or 180 phase difference between the outputs depending on the design topology. The 3 dB coupler is one of the basic circuit components for balanced amplifiers [1], sideband separating (2SB) mixers [2]- [4], array antennas [5], filers, and more.…”

“…We will only simulate left circular polarized radiation, and we assume 1500 K single-sideband system noise temperature. This number is a rough extrapolation to lower frequencies from the expected system noise temperature of the Jupiter Icy Moons' Sub-millimeter Wave Instrument's 600 GHz band (see Sobis et al, 2011, and Treuttel et al, 2016, for more details on the JUICE/SWI receiver). This extrapolation simply scales the SWI number by the frequency ratio of the channels and rounds the results up for good measure.…”

“…The transmitter front-end consists of the antenna, a broadband Schottky doubler, an HBV varactor quintupler along with an isolator and a coaxial to waveguide transition. The receiver front-end shares its configuration with the transmitter with the exception of the doubler which is replaced by a second harmonic Schottky mixer [45].…”

“…A second-harmonic Schottky mixer, described in [45], is used to down-convert the 346 GHz measurement signal to 912 MHz. The LO drive is provided by an HBV quintupler identical to the one used in the transmit chain.…”
