A macroscopic description of coherent geo-magnetic radiation from cosmic-ray air showers

Abstract: We have developed a macroscopic description of coherent electro-magnetic radiation from air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays due to the presence of the geo-magnetic field. This description offers a simple and direct insight in the relation between the properties of the air shower and the time-structure of the radio pulse.

“…In addition to the microscopic simulation of air showers, macroscopic models (e.g., [11]) have been developed. They have been imperative to gaining an understanding of the dominant emission mechanisms, namely geomagnetically induced time-varying transverse currents and a time-varying negative charge excess (also called Askaryan effect), which superpose with characteristic signal polarizations leading to an asymmetric signal distribution in the shower plane.…”

“…The absolute amount of this charge excess changes during the shower development, as the total number of particles changes. Hence, this leads to a radio emission with radial polarization, like it is expected from any changing net charge (see also [33,39]). 5.…”

“…Summing up the emission of individual mechanisms is an approach followed by the MGMR [39] model. This model agrees in first order with REAS3 calculations [33], which shows that the picture of individual emission mechanisms is a reasonable approximation.…”
