A magnetostatic force inspection method for monitoring the oscillation marks of continuous casting

Abstract: Based on the well-known fact that ferromagnetic materials can be significantly attracted by a permanent magnet (PM), we develop an innovative magnetostatic force inspection method to monitor the oscillating marks formed during continuous casting. A small PM produces a static magnetic field that penetrates into the ferromagnetic material slab formed via continuous casting. This magnet forms a localized magnetic sensing zone (MSZ) within the ferromagnetic material. The magnetostatic force acting on the ferromagn… Show more

“…Due to the production process and external reasons, the finished product will have defects such as inclusion, crazing, patches, scratches, waist folding, and other defects on the surface of the strip steel. These defects not only affect the appearance of the product, inspection, eddy current inspection [4], magnetic flux leakage testing [5], but the above three methods have obvious drawbacks. The cost of manual visual inspection is high, the efficiency is low, and there is a certain degree of missed inspection; eddy current inspection is easy to be restricted by the tested materials, and it is difficult to judge the type of defects; the efficiency of magnetic flux leakage testing is low, and it requires a high level of inspection personnel.…”

“…They use a force sensor to measure the reaction of the Lorentz force acting on the PM [10][11][12]. Wang used a laser cantilever magnet (LCM) system to measure the Lorentz force [13][14][15] and Dai detected cracks by array probes consisting of PMs based on speckle pattern interferometry [16].…”

“…A noninvasive tomography system was developed to detect production abnormalities by calculating the temperature distribution in a polymer melt [7]. An innovative magnetostatic force inspection method was developed to monitor the oscillating marks formed during continuous casting [8]. Wang et al [9] proposed a device that detected abnormal conditions by studying the compaction behavior and permeability of preforms in vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding [9].…”
