A Markov-based channel model algorithm for wireless networks

Abstract: Techniques for modeling and simulating channel conditions play an essential role in understanding network protocol and application behavior. In [11], we demonstrated that inaccurate modeling using a traditional analytical model yielded significant errors in error control protocol parameters choices. In this paper, we demonstrate that time-varying effects on wireless channels result in wireless traces which exhibit non-stationary behavior over small window sizes. We then present an algorithm that divides traces… Show more

“…Trace-driven network models are popular in research areas where active measurements are difficult to perform, including wireless networks [16], mobile networks [15], and Internet backbone traffic [6]. Researchers continue to rely on synthetic model-generated traffic traces for experimental research, even as they recognize and continue to reduce the inherent error introduced by these models [15].…”

“…wired and wireless networks has shown that the validity of experimental results depends on the accuracy of the data used [12,16]. This is especially true for the growing area of online social networks, where evaluation of social applications can produce very different results depending on the social graphs used [35].…”

“…In this protocol the cost of forwarding packets through a link depends on which node a packet arrives from. This protocol uses the Markovian [14] metric for channel resource consumption optimization because of local coding. COAR which was introduced by Yan et al [15] combines NC and opportunistic routing approaches.…”

“…The 4-state Markov model and the Markovbased Trace Analysis [16] outperformed the Gilbert model, as the latter was unable to reproduce the variance in burst error lengths. Gamma distributed state durations can be used to replicate the variance in error burst lengths [20], [39].…”
