A Material-Balance Equation for Stress-Sensitive Shale-Gas-Condensate Reservoirs

Abstract: Summary During the last few years, production of liquid hydrocarbons has been reported from the gas-condensate window of the Eagle Ford, Barnett, Niobrara, and Marcellus shale plays in the US. This paper presents a new material-balance equation (MBE) for estimation of original gas in place (OGIP) and original condensate in place (OCIP) in shale-gas-condensate reservoirs. This material-balance methodology allows estimating the critical time for implementing gas injection in those cases in which c… Show more

“…Some researchers are expecting that this type of gas will increase the energy supply throughout the world. Multiple porosities are the important characteristics of Shale gas reservoirs (Orozco and Aguilera 2017). These multiple porosities are: (i) adsorbed porosity, (ii) organic porosity, (iii) inorganic matrix porosity, (iv) natural fractures porosity, and (v) hydraulic fractures porosity (Aguilera and Lopez, 2013).…”

“…The large-scale development of shale gas benefited from the significant advancement in horizontal well completion and segmented volume fracturing reconstruction technologies. After a horizontal well is fractured in segments, an extremely complex fracture grid system will be created, and these fracture grids will greatly improve the permeability of the reservoirs within the fracturing communication range, enabling the originally abnormally dense shale reservoirs to be effectively connected to the wellbore, so that the development of shale gas could have commercial values [7][8][9]. The desorption effect of adsorbed gas and the complex fracture network formed after segmented fracturing make the shale gas wells exhibit different dynamic production characteristics from the conventional gas wells [10,11].…”

“…In this paper, the content of moisture and ash of the combustible working material was used to determine the elemental composition of the petroleum product. The materialbalance equation for the estimation of the gas and condensate in place in shale-gas-condensate reservoirs has been described in [21]. The task of this materialbalance is estimating the critical time for using the gas injection when the condensate buildup represents a problem.…”
