A Mathematical Model of Contact Tracing during the 2014–2016 West African Ebola Outbreak

Abstract: The 2014–2016 West African outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) was the largest and most deadly to date. Contact tracing, following up those who may have been infected through contact with an infected individual to prevent secondary spread, plays a vital role in controlling such outbreaks. Our aim in this work was to mechanistically represent the contact tracing process to illustrate potential areas of improvement in managing contact tracing efforts. We also explored the role contact tracing played in eventua… Show more

“…We estimate the remaining five parameters, and , of the model using the MultiStart algorithm with the fmincon function in MATLAB’s optimization toolbox ( Burton et al, 2021 ; Che, Kang & Yakubu, 2020 ; Che et al, 2021 ; Edholm et al, 2019 ; Edholm et al, 2022 ; Loria, 2018 ). The fitting was implemented by formulating a least-squares optimization problem with the aim of minimizing the difference between the cumulative cases in each of the six countries and our model’s output.…”

“…Due to the similarities of MVD and EVD, the same challenges also apply to the latter. Furthermore, contact tracing and isolation as primary control strategy present significant logistic and economic strains on the public health systems in low income countries [ 69 ].…”
