A Medium for the Isolation of Staphylococci from Foodstuffs

Abstract: Summary. A liquid medium for the isolation of staphylococci from foodstuffs, containing lithium chloride, potassium tellurite and glycine as inhibitors of contaminants other than cocci, is described. Micrococci are inhibited in the cultures by anaerobic conditions produced by agar seals. With this medium staphylococci are easily isolated even when their numbers in foodstuffs are low.

“…Parallel cultivation experiments were performed to assess the persistence of staphylococci in hospital biofilms. Following enrichment with a synthetic medium [20], S. aureus , S. chromogenes , and S. epidermidis were cultivated. Of all staphylococci isolated, only the S. epidermidis isolate was resistant to methicillin.…”

“…However, the advantage of using the MPN method for 2,4-D-degrading microorganisms is they can be counted in the presence of other more abundant organisms (Loos et al 1979). The MPN technique is generally considered to be more efficient than the plating method in enumerating low numbers or when high levels of competing organisms are present (Giolitti and Cantoni 1966;Baer et al 1971;Patterson 1973). Eisenhart and Wilson (1943) have presented an excellent review of early studies on the problem of estimating the density of a bacterial population using the dilution method.…”
