A meta-analysis of genetic effects associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and co-occurring conditions

Abstract: A systematic understanding of the aetiology of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and their co-occurrence with other conditions during childhood and adolescence remains incomplete. In the current meta-analysis, we synthesized the literature on (1) the contribution of genetic and environmental factors to NDDs, (2) the genetic and environmental overlap between different NDDs, and (3) the co-occurrence between NDDs and disruptive, impulse control and conduct disorders (DICCs). Searches were conducted across thre… Show more

“…Third, genetic and genomic findings have already shown a significant possibility of gene overlapping that may contribute to the presence of OCS in schizophrenia [ 21 ]. However, estimates of family-based genetic, shared and non-shared environmental influences, as well as SNP heritability, need to be investigated more deeply for significantly overlapping phenotypes in schizophrenia with OCS [ 343 ].…”

“…Neurodevelopmental conditions, such as autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are highly heritable [1,2] and have the earliest age-of-onset of neuropsychiatric conditions. [3] Prior to the ages at which these conditions are typically diagnosed, numerous early indicators have been robustly associated with later neurodevelopmental diagnoses.…”

“…Autistic individuals 1 also have increased liability for a range of physical conditions 7 . Shared genetic influences between autism, autistic traits and neurodevelopmental, psychiatric and physical conditions may explain part of this phenotypic co-occurrence 8,9 .…”
