“…A meta-analysis composed of ten clinical trials showed that music therapy has a significant clinical benefit for premature infants in the NICU (10) . The results indicate a positive effect on long-term variables such as length of stay, weight gain, and nonnutritive sucking rate, besides beneficial effects in variables such as oxygenation, HR, and behavioral scoring (23) .…”

“…The available literature suggests that the presence of harmonic and rhythmic sound can relieve the pain of emotional and physical causes (9) and act on hemodynamic parameters such as heart rate (HR), systemic blood pressure (BP), and body temperature (BT), in addition to relaxing the patient, with adjustment of respiratory rhythm, muscular relaxation, and sleep improvement (10) .…”

“…This noise may impact on newborn´s life quality and health, his family and health professionals. Several devices that support the life of newborns in the NICU, such as respirators, humidifiers and even incubators, when operating, become sources of noise 1-2 and they may also constitute potent factors of stress for neonates [3][4][5][6] as well as professionals. [7][8][9] Noise is a disorganized sound in physiologically incompatible frequencies with the human ear.…”

“…Noise can also provoke alterations in the baby´s states of sleep and wakefulness, making him irritable, tearful and damaging his development. 6 Moreover, an excessively noisy environment causes alteration on his behavior, impairing his ability to interact and, thus, compromising the bond formation between the baby and his parents. 5 Currently, the study on hearing loss related to long exposure to noise, in newborns hospitalized at the NICU, is pretty much explored.…”

“…Several piece of equipment that support newborns' lives at the NICU, such as breathers, humidifiers, and even the incubators, while working, become a source of noise and can be a powerful stress factor (3)(4)(5) . Disorganized sounds in a frequency that is physiologically incompatible with the human ear are considered noises, and can cause physical lesions, psychological, and behavioral changes (6)(7) . When exposed to excessive noise, the newborn body can present different responses, such as: hypoxia, release of adrenocorticotropic hormone and adrenaline in the blood stream, increase in heart rate, systemic vasoconstriction, , pupil dilation, increase in blood and intracranial pressure, increase in oxygen consumption and caloric requirements, that can lead to delay in weight gain in the long term.…”
