A Metacognitive Intervention of Narrative Imagery for young people with cystic fibrosis: A feasibility study

Abstract: Cystic fibrosis and its treatment can have substantial functional and emotional impacts on patients and their families. This feasibility study assessed a new cystic fibrosis treatment, Metacognitive Intervention of Narrative Imagery, integrating narrative and meta-cognitive therapies with mental imagery. A total of 13 patients, aged 10–17 years, received three 1-hour sessions and were assessed on emotional functioning, anxiety, and depression at baseline and 4 and 8 weeks post-baseline. “…Pediatric chronic illness is generally characterized by incurability or duration of at least 3 months, limitations in age-appropriate function and activities, and need for health services extending beyond routine care (van Der et al, 2007). Youth with chronic illness can consistently experience inferior physical (Silva et al, 2019), psychological (Ahola Kohut et al, 2016; Pinquart, 2017; Reaume and Ferro, 2019), and social and emotional (Denny et al, 2014; Maes et al, 2017; Russell et al, 2019) well-being compared to their healthy peers. In addition, youth with childhood-onset chronic illness may suffer from poorer educational and vocational outcomes compared to youth who are healthy and/or experience later-onset of illness (Lum et al, 2017; Maslow et al, 2011; Yoder and Cantrell, 2019).…”

“…Sample size calculations were conducted using G*Power 3.1.9.7 for repeated measures ANOVA for within and between group differences using two groups and two measurement time points, and with alpha = .05, power = 0.95 and Cohen's f = Cohen's d /2 (Cohen, 1988). Sample size estimates were made for both assumptions of the control group showing no change across time, as well as showing half the effect of the intervention as done in other feasibility studies (Russell, Strodl, Connolly, & Kavanagh, 2021).…”
