A metal-free heterogeneous photocatalyst for the selective oxidative cleavage of CC bonds in aryl olefinsviaharvesting direct solar energy

Abstract: A mild protocol has been developed using polymeric carbon nitrides (PCN) as metal-free heterogeneous photocatalyst to convert olefins into the corresponding carbonyls which even can be applied in the gram scale synthesis using direct solar energy.

“…It should be noted that although quasi monochromatic artificial light generated by cost effective LEDs is typically utilized in organic photoredox catalysis, several works report using solar light under outdoor conditions in CN mediated organic synthesis that illustrates solar-to-chemicals concept in sustainable transition metal free heterogeneous organic synthesis. [72] The interesting concept of using a combination of CNs and electron mediator, O 2 or methyl viologen, as 'light-activated acid' in organocatalysis has been validated in synthesis of ketals and acetals, a reaction that typically requires acid catalysis. [73] Finally, we would like to point out that the application of carbon nitrides in light energy conversion extends beyond organic synthesis.…”

“…We have carried out a number of experiments to understand the possible mechanism of the conversion of the styrenes. [38] Thus, the reaction was conducted in the presence of different additives such as (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl) oxidanyl (TEMPO), benzoquinone, and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2] octane (DABCO) ( Table S11). The use of TEMPO (free radical quencher) and benzoquinone (superoxide quencher) completely prevented the transformation.…”

“…But owing to the price, metal-free catalysts should get more priority. [84][85][86] Additionally, if these can be achieved with a metal-free heterogeneous catalyst, the whole procedure will be much more attractive from the pharmaceutical point of view.…”
