Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) is an important oil seed crop that is mostly cultivated in temperate climates. In addition to many commercial applications, flax is also used as a fibrous species or for livestock feed (animal fodder). For the last 40 years, flax has been used as a phytoremediation tool for the remediation of different heavy metals, particularly for phytoextraction when cultivated on metal contaminated soils. Among different fibrous crops (hemp, jute, ramie, and kenaf), flax represents the most economically important species and the majority of studies on metal contaminated soil for the phytoextraction of heavy metals have been conducted using flax. Therefore, a comprehensive review is needed for a better understanding of the phytoremediation potential of flax when grown in metal contaminated soil. This review describes the existing studies related to the phytoremediation potential of flax in different mediums such as soil and water. After phytoremediation, flax has the potential to be used for additional purposes such as linseed oil, fiber, and important livestock feed. This review also describes the phytoremediation potential of flax when grown in metal contaminated soil. Furthermore, techniques and methods to increase plant growth and biomass are also discussed in this work. However, future research is needed for a better understanding of the physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, and molecular biology of flax for increasing its pollutant removal efficiency.

The relationship of toxic elements (As, Cd, Cr) and trace elements (Cu, Se, Ni, Zn, Mn) in rice bran and corresponding polished rice is not well known. A total of 446 rice grains were collected from paddy fields distributed across China, and the concentrations of 8 elements in rice bran and their corresponding polished rice were measured. The levels of As, Cd, Cr, and Se have a good linear relationship between rice bran and polished rice (R2: .79, .97, .82, .99, respectively; all p < .001). Polishing rice could effectively remove the average contents of 44.4% As, 19.8% Cd, and 15.4% Cr in the whole grain, but caused the substantial losses of more than half of Mn and Ni (57.7% and 56.9%), and nearly one‐third (30.9%, 31.5%, and 29.1%) of Cu, Se, and Zn in brown rice although only about 10% of rice bran was milled. The "L" type correlation exists not only between As and Cd, but also between the nutrients Se, Mn, Ni, and the toxic elements As, Cd. These results indicated that As accumulation in rice could reduce the levels of essential mineral nutrients Mn, Ni, and Se. On the contrary, improving nutrient elements by fertilization could decrease the accumulation of some toxic elements. This provides a practical new idea for the prevention and control of rice As or Cd, and concomitantly improves the deficiency of nutrient elements in rice.

Background: Lotus is an aquatic horticultural crop, and widely cultivated in most regions of China.Lotus is often used as a kind of an important off-season vegetable with various nutrients. Principle root of lotus is degenerated, and the role of adventitious roots (ARs) is Irreplaceable for plant growth.We found that no ARs could be formed under darkness condition, and high light significantly promote the development of root primordium. Therefore, four libraries with three light intensities were constructed to monitor metabolism changes, especially in IAA and sugar metabolism.Results: We found that ARs formation was significantly affected by light, high light intensity accelerated ARs development. The change of metabolism during ARs formation under different light intensity was evaluated according to gene expression profiling by high-throughput tag-sequencing. It was shown that more than 2.2× 10 4 genes was obtained in each library, and the expression level of most genes were distributed between 1e-01 and 1e+03 (FPKF value). Among these identified genes, 1739, 1683 and 1462 genes were up-regulated, and 1533, 995 and 834 genes were down-regulated in D/CK, E/CK and F/CK libraries respectively. In addition, we also found that 1454 and 478 genes changed expression in D/CK and F/CK libraries when compared D/CK with F/CK libraries. In F/D libraries, the transcriptional level of most differentially expressed genes was between -5~5 fold, and twenty differentially expressed genes were involved in signal transduction pathway. Twenty-eight genes related with IAA response and thirty-five genes involved in sugar metabolism were found to change expression. It was elucidated that IAA content was enhanced after seed germinated, even in darkness condition, which was responsible for ARs formation.Conclusion: The process of ARs formation was very complex, and regulated by multiple factors. The ARs formation was regulated by IAA, even in the dark, induction and developmental process could also be completed. In addition, the genes (36 genes) changed expression level in carbohydrate metabolism showed the third number, so sucrose metabolism was involved in the ARs development (expressed stage) according to genes expression and content change characteristic.
