A Method for Identifying Pollution Sources of Heavy Metals and PAH for a Risk-Based Management of a Mediterranean Harbour

Abstract: A procedure for assessing harbour pollution by heavy metals and PAH and the possible sources of contamination is proposed. The procedure is based on a ratio-matching method applied to the results of principal component analysis (PCA), and it allows discrimination between point and nonpoint sources. The approach can be adopted when many sources of pollution can contribute in a very narrow coastal ecosystem, both internal and outside but close to the harbour, and was used to identify the possible point sources o… Show more

“…Moreover, the Monte Carlo simulation of uncertainties was applied in the risk assessment model by collecting limited samples to predict the overall situation. As a result, the risk uncertainty was expressed intuitively, in agreement with the order of the nature, which favors for a decision-making for risk managers and policymakers ( Paladino, Moranda & Seyedsalehi, 2017 ; Sasi, Yozukmaz & Yabanli, 2017 ). The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has set the Monte Carlo simulation as a basic method in the risk analysis policy ( Moolenaar, 1996 ).…”

“…The Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to identify the factors responsible for the accumulation of trace metals in the studied local and exotic fruits and their relationships [70,71]. The values extracted from the PCA are presented in Table 5.…”

“…The principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized in this study to recognize the factors responsible for the accumulation of toxic metals in the studied vegetables [71,72]. Results in Table 3 indicate two key factors responsible for the accumulation of toxic metals in vegetables from the South with Eigen values > 1 with 87.08% of the total variance.…”
