A method for the complete analysis of NORM building materials by γ-ray spectrometry using HPGe detectors

Abstract: A methodology including software tools for analysing NORM building materials and residues by low-level gamma-ray spectrometry has been developed. It comprises deconvolution of gamma-ray spectra using the software GALEA with focus on the natural radionuclides and Monte Carlo simulations for efficiency and true coincidence summing corrections. The methodology has been tested on a range of building materials and validated against reference materials.

“…The calculation of the dose rate helps to identify the areas with radioactive hazard. The European Council Directive (2013) reported that the level of indoor external exposure to gamma radiation due to building materials should be less than 1 mSv/y, (Quintana et al, 2018). This dose rate associated with the local geology of the sites (Furukawa & Shingaki, 2012).…”

“…The objective is to verify the responses obtained by portable detectors used in the field, in order to better guide the actions of emergency response Brazilian Journal of Development, Curitiba, v.8, n.1, p. 3383-3400 jan. 2022 groups [2,3]. In this context, for the quantification of these radionuclides, there are several techniques used to evaluate their concentrations in samples from environmental systems [4,5,6].…”

“…Dating of coastal sedimentary cores of paleoclimatic interest for ages between 100 and 200 years is usually obtained by applying the dating models based on 210 Pb in excess (Mabit et al, 2014), due to its suitable half-life, T 1/2 ¼ 22.23 (12) a (B e et al, 2011). For this purpose, conventional gamma spectrometry can be used (Hassan et al, 1997;Manolopoulou et al, 2003;Chen and Huh, 1999), since it allows measuring the radionuclides of the natural disintegration chains simultaneously, in particular, 210 Pb, 226 Ra, 214 Pb and 235/238 U (Quintana et al, 2018). The resulting chronologies are validated with artificial radionuclides like 241 Am and 137 Cs (Alvarez-Iglesias et al, 2007;Leorri et al, 2014;Irabien et al, 2015;Alvarez-V azquez et al, 2016;S anchez-Cabeza and Ruiz--Fern andez, 2012).…”
