A METHOD FOR THE ESTIMATION OF OESTRIOL, OESTRONE AND OESTRADIOL-17β IN THE BLOOD OF THE PREGNANT WOMAN AND OF THE FOETUS

Abstract: A chemical method for the estimation of oestriol, oestrone and oestradiol-17\g=b\ in the blood of the pregnant woman and of the foetus is described. It is based on a method previously developed for urine and involves acid hydrolysis of whole blood, extraction of the phenolic fraction, methylation, chromatography on alumina columns and colorimetric measurement using a micro-modification of the Kober reaction. Kober-chromogenic impurities in the final extracts are derived from the procedure, not from the blood, … Show more

“…The extraction and purification procedure described by Roy & Brown (1960) for the colorimetrie measurement of oestrogens in the blood of pregnant women was first investigated. However, it became apparent that further purification was required, and therefore the saponifi¬ cation step as described by Brown, Bulbrook & Greenwood (1957) for urine was in¬ corporated.…”

“…Until recently, methods for the estimation of oestrogens in plasma were available but not widely utilised because the methods were long and intricate (Roy and Brown, 1960;Preedy and Aitken, 1961) and the sensitivity was such that fairly large volumes of blood were required. Two developments have changed this situation.…”

“…Die Ausgangswerte für Gesamtocstrogene im Plasma schwangerer Frauen des X. Monats liegen etwa zwischen 0 und 12 gg (Mittel 9 gg) Gesamtocstrogene pro 100 ml mit chemischen Methoden nach Roy und Brown [9]. Andere Autoren gehen etwas höhere W erte an.…”
