A method for the purification of rubber and properties of the purified rubber

Abstract: Purified rubber was prepared by the digestion of crude rubber or latex with water at about 190°C, followed by extraction with water and with alcohol, and drying in an atmosphere of inert gas. The digestion hydrolyzed the proteins, and the extraction removed the hydrolysis products, resins, and other impurities. The purified rubber contained about 99.5 per cent of rubber hydrocarbon. Properties of the rubber hydrocarbon at 25°C. were: Density, 0.9060; refractive index,

“…The fractionation/purification process used produced relatively insoluble G fractions and relatively soluble S fractions (8.4, 15.1% gel) for the Hevea rubber materials, comparable to that of commercial deproteinized HA latex (16.2%). 17 In the case of guayule rubber, % gel in the control sample was low (11%), in agreement with other reports 6,18 and similar to that of Hevea S fractions (8.4% and 20.8%, respectively, for TPC-S and STR5L-S). Guayule GNR-S has even lower gel (3.8%).…”

“…Hence th e number of significan t figures used h ere shows only th e precision of th e present measurements of a sample of given composition. Earlier work [5,6] h as shown lit tle variation with composition in t h e fourth-pl ace index values, but further studies would b e r equired to show the effect of impurities on fif th -place and sixth-place values.…”

“…The molecular relractivity can be calculated by the Lorenz-Lorentz relation from the present data by taking the value 0.906 g/cm 3 for the density at 25° C. of purified nat ural rubb er [5,7]. As poin ted out in the earlier paper [1] the r esul t, 22.82, is in sufficiently good agreement with values obtained by taking the sum of atomic r efrac t ivities to afford optical confirmation of the existence of a CsH a group conLaining one double bond as the unit group in rubber.…”
