A Method for the Support of the Design for Digital Twin Solution and Its Application on a Gearbox System

Abstract: The information from Real Twins are increasingly used to construct Digital Twins. Acquisition of information from the Real Twin or in other words performing measurements on the Real Twin may lead to effects in the working of Real Twin. For instance, the introduction of sensors may impair certain functions of a Real Twin. Therefore, it is important to analyse the effect of any change that is performed on the Real Twin for achieving the Digital Twin. In this paper, a method for Digital Twin solution is presented… Show more

“…In order to enable the Digital Twins to deliver the relevant information in a goal-oriented way, they must already be conceptualised and designed during product development. In joint research activities with TU Darmstadt, methods for the systematic development of Digital Twin solutions are being developed (Koch et al 2022; Husung et al 2023).…”

“…Digital Twins support different use cases in several product life phases (e.g., predictive maintenance during usage, sustainability assessment of products during use, provision of services, support of remote control, feedback of insights from product usage for further development, support of verification and validation through a systematic comparison of model-based descriptions of the Real and Digital Twins during development, etc.) [1][2][3][4][5][6]. For this purpose, information is exchanged between the Real and Digital Twin and processed in the Digital Twin (e.g., in form of simulations of the expected behavior of the Real Twin), which ultimately leads to application-specific actions in the Real and Digital Twin.…”

“…In order to support the systematic development as needed, there are approaches for the development of Digital Twins [9]. For the systematic and need-oriented development of Digital Twin Solutions, Koch and Husung [6] proposed an approach that consists of four steps and focuses on the aspects shown in Figure 2. Much work already exists on the other aspects of Digital Twin Solutions, some of which should be mentioned here [10][11][12][13].…”
