A method of calculating the non‐linear seismic response of a building braced with viscoelastic dampers

Abstract: SUMMARYBuildings are continually subject to dynamic loads, such as wind load, seismic ground motion, and even the load from internal utility machines. The recent trend of constructing more exible high-rise buildings underscores the importance of including viscoelastic dampers in building designs. Viscoelastic dampers are used to control the dynamic response of a building. If the seismic design is based only on the linear response spectrum, considerable error may occur when calculating the seismic response of a… Show more

“…Based on the seismic reliability analysis of a hysteretic structure equipped with VE dampers performed by Guo et al, it was evident that adopting VE dampers can significantly enhance the reliability of the installed structure. Choi et al numerically verified that adopting VE dampers had a better displacement control performance for the installed structure than acceleration one.…”

“…In the first case they allow the supports to deform with a large dissipation and re-centering capacity [1]. In the second case they improve the stiffness and dissipation capacity of frame structures (new or existing) when utilized in dissipating braces [2][3][4][5].…”
