A Method of Calculating the Interaction Energy between Particles in Minerals Flotation

Abstract: Extended-DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) theory is applied to calculating the interaction energy between particles in flotation process in the paper. This study investigates and compares the floatability of magnesite, dolomite, serpentine, and quartz in single mineral flotation and artificial mixture flotation with DDA as collector. The results showed that when the pH, dissolved ions, and competitive adsorption had a minor influence on their floatability, fine magnesite and dolomite largely decreased t… Show more

“…accepted ranges for particle-bubble interactions (Israelachvili and Pashley, 1982;Eriksson et al, 1989;Ducker et al, 1994;Yao et al, 2016). Already when the HAC concentration was 0.667 mg HAC /m 2 QRZ , non-compressive attachments between QRZ particles and air bubbles occurred, proving that HAC renders the mineral surface more hydrophobic, in line with earlier studies (Laitinen et al, 2016;Hartmann et al, 2017Hartmann et al, , 2018.…”

“…With the help of the ζ potential, V el between dissimilar spherical particles can be calculated according to eq 6 ( 49 ) Here, D QRZ and D HAC are the diameters of quartz and the projected area diameter ( d a ) of HAC and κ is the Debye length. V struc between quartz and HACs is given by 48 Here, l is the layer thickness of oriented water molecules on the quartz and HAC surface, which was assumed to be 1 nm, 52 H 0 is the minimum separation distance, set to 0.163 nm, 53 and γ + and γ – represent nondispersion interactions of quartz and HACs, respectively, and were measured in previous studies using the inverse gas chromatography technique (see Table 1 ). 7 The γ + and γ – values of quartz are functions of the partial coverage of the quartz surface with injected probe molecules and thus both maximum and minimum values of γ + and γ – were used for the calculations.…”

“…Besides the experimental approaches, theoretical viewpoints were also used for modeling both bubble-particle and particle-particle interactions that occur during flotation and aggregation processes (Mao, 1998;Liu and Zu, 2007;Guven et al, 2015;Yao et al, 2016;Xing et al, 2017). In this context, the application of classical DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) theory has been used for modeling both stabilization and destabilization of charged colloidal particles under different conditions for almost a century (Suresh and Walz, 1996;Gao et al, 2017).…”
