A method of determination of the rate of molecular dissociation in solution. Parts I and II.—The rate of dissociation of benzoyl peroxide and 2 : 2′-azo-bis(isobutyronitrile) in various solvents

Abstract: The vividly coloured free radical aor-diphenyl p-picryl hydrazyl which gives stable solutions in a wide range of organic solvents rapidly reacts with radicals formed by thermal dissociation of peroxides and azo compounds in solution.

“…The decomposition of AIBN has been extensively studied and reported to follow a first-order process [23][24][25]. Hammond et al [11] measured the rate constant for decomposition of AIBN to be 11.8 × 10 −6 s −1 in carbon tetrachloride and 14.2 × 10 −6 s −1 in benzene at 62.5 • C. Areizaga and Guzman [26] have obtained a value of 6.0 × 10 −6 and 2.4 × 10 −5 s −1 for the production of scavengable pairs of free radicals from AIBN at temperatures of 59.8 and 69.9 • C, respectively, during the polymerization of styrene.…”

“…Bawn & Halford (11) extended their investi gations of the rates of decomposition of initiators used in polymerization to include diacetyl and dilauroyl peroxides. The radicals produced in the pri mary dissociation process were removed by reaction with aa-diphenyl ,B-picryl hydrazyl as described previously (12). The unimolecular rate constants are found to be slightly dependent on the solvents.…”
