A method to evaluate the overall performance of the CAS-W1 airfoils for wind turbines

Abstract: This paper presents an evaluation method with a performance parameter system of wind turbine airfoils, and then estimates the overall performance of the CAS-W1 airfoils compared with some DU airfoils with available experimental data. The CAS-W1 airfoil family is developed by Institute of Engineering Thermophysics with the XFOIL code. The family includes 11 airfoils, whose relative thickness ranges from 15% to 60%. Four thin airfoils and three thick airfoils have been measured in NF-3 wind tunnel in Northwester… Show more

“…Then, parameterization of the desired airfoil features is necessary. The authors have previously established an evaluation method and a related indicator system for the overall aerodynamic performance of wind turbine airfoils . According to the blade requirements presented above, the parameterization of the concerned objectives is introduced in the following section.…”

“…More detailed introduction about the definition of M stall could be found in Ref. 22. For the Re stability, according to the Re range at which a large thickness airfoil may operate, aerodynamic parameters will be calculated at five different Re (Re ¼ 5 Â 10 6 , 4.0 Â 10 6 , 3.5 Â 10 6 , 3.0 Â 10 6 , 2.5 Â 10 6 ).…”
