A methodology for machine tools error correction using reference parts

Abstract: In this paper, a methodology is presented for machine tool error correction which uses reference parts as metrological standards. These reference parts have the same geometric shape and weight as. real workpieces. Consequently, the proposed methodology minimizes the uncertainty which arises from geometric interpolation, but still yields satisfactory results for multi-axis machine error characterization. A generalized error model is derived 10 describe the relative error motion between the 1001 and the workpiec… Show more

“…The original work of parametric error measurement and determination was presented by Hocken (1977) at NIST and further work in this area was undertaken by numerous researchers with applications to both CMMs and metal cutting machine tools (Kruth et al , 1994; Kunzman et al , 1990; Mou and Liu, 1995; Ni, 1997, Sartori and Zhang, 1995; Trapet and Waldale, 1991; Zhang and Fu, 2000; Zhang et al , 1985, 1988). The predominant way of determining machine parametric errors uses laser interferometer and electronic levels to measure these errors directly on the machine.…”

“…A methodology to correct the relative error motion between the tool and the workpiece was presented by [8]; it uses reference parts as methodological standards. A system able to predict surface texture from highly sparse learning data was developed by [9].…”

“…Tong et al (2004) presented a more comprehensive method for RP machines error evaluation and error compensation using “virtual” parametric errors, inspired by the technique developed over the years for parametric evaluation of CMM errors (Belforte et al , 1987; Elshennawy, 1987; Ferreira and Liu, 1986; Hocken, 1995; Kunzman et al , 1990; Mou and Liu, 1995; Ni, 1997; Sartori and Zhang, 1995; Trapet and Waldele, 1991; Zhang et al , 1985, 1988). A typical CMM has three linear carriages, designed to move independently along the X , Y , or Z axis.…”
