A Methodology for Steady and Unsteady Full-Engine Simulations

Abstract: With the increase of computational power, more sophisticated computational methods can be used, larger systems simulated, and complex phenomena predicted more reliably. Nevertheless, up to now, when turbomachinery systems are numerically optimized, each of the components, i.e., the compressor, combustor, and turbine, is simulated separately from the other two. While this approach allows the use of highly dedicated simulation tools, it does not account for the interactions between the different components. … Show more

“…The Coupler Unit of JM76 implements the concept of "smart edge" [19], also referred to as "smart interface methodology" by some authors [24]. It is essentially a program that follows a sequence of instructions on a two-entry data set pertaining to a specific interface.…”

“…However, due to the difficulty in coupling the codes, the work reports inaccuracies with the generated results [20]. The first mathematically accurate example was performed by NUMECA, simulating compressor-combustorturbine interaction in a KJ66 gas turbine engine [21]. However, this was achieved using a RANS approach throughout the simulation, which is a much low accuracy method compared to a URANS or LES model that is typically needed for production aero-engine design.…”

“…The cross-coupling between the sets are ignored but they are indirectly coupled through the mean flow in a fashion similar to FNLH. Extending NLH/FNLH to multistage simulations is more straightforward compared to HB and applications can be found in simulating compressor clocking [13], tracing hot stream migrations in multistage turbines [14] or whole engine simulations [15].…”
