AbstractThis paper presents a detailed study on the optimization of slim-hole dual-body bits made in-house for use in Coring-While-Drilling (CWD). Investigations consisted of extensive coring and drilling laboratory tests in soft, medium and hard rocks. In addition, an apparatus was designed and built to investigate the effect of the rotary speeds on the pressure distribution underneath the bits. To calibrate the experimental work, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques were used to investigate the flow characteristics of the bits.
