A Methyl Tricyanoethylenecarboxylate‐Based Room‐Temperature Magnet

Abstract: Since the discovery of the first organic-based magnet, [Fe(C 5 Me 5 ) 2 ][TCNE] (TCNE = tetracyanoethylene), [1] efforts worldwide have focused on the discovery and characterization of new magnetic materials with enhanced and controllable magnetic properties.[2]The organic-based magnet of V[TCNE] x ·zCH 2 Cl 2 (x ≈ 2; z ≈ 0.5) composition with an ordering temperature T c of about 400 K can be synthesized via the reaction of V(C 6 H 6 ) 2 [3a] or V(CO) [5]With the goal of finding new organic-based magnets t… Show more

“…The composition of the initial precipitate after allowing the reaction to proceed for two hours, was determined to be V[TCNPy] 2 ⋅ z (CH 2 Cl 2 ) from the observed elemental composition as well as the thermogravimetric analysis. This is expected and is commonly observed, that is, A=TCNE, α,α′‐dicyanoperfluorostilbene, TCNP, TCNQ, tricyanoethylene‐carboxylate, 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluorophenyltricyanoethylene, etc.…”

“…demonstrating proper spin glass behavior with ethyl tricyanoethylene carboxylate (MeTCEC) [12]. This paper reports the use muon spin relaxation (μSR) spectroscopy [13] to reveal the spin freezing process and spin glass-like behavior of a new magnetic surfactant with a lanthanide counterion [14], 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroholminate ([C10mim][HoCl4], Figure 1).…”

“…[1] Most intriguing are several room temperature magnets, but their understanding and exploitation has been thwarted by their amorphous nature. [2][3][4][5] The best studied is V [TCNE] x [tetracyanoethylene (TCNE); x $ 2]-a ferrimagnetic semiconductor that magnetically orders above room temperature (T c $ 400 K). [2,6,7] Its valence and conduction bands are spinpolarized [8] suggestive of multifunctional and ''spintronic'' applications.…”
