A Microfluidic Reactor for Energy Applications

Abstract: Miniature microbial fuel cells have recently drawn lots of attention as portable power generation devices due to their short startup time and environmentally-friendly process which could be used for powering small integrated biosensors. We designed and fabricated a microbial fuel cell in a microfluidic platform. The device was made in polydimethylsiloxane with a volume of 4 µL and consisted of two carbon cloth electrodes and proton exchange membrane. Shewanella Oneidensis MR-1 was chosen to be the electrogenic… Show more

“…The biofilm formation on the carbon cloth during the test provides further evidence that the current measured was the result of the bio-chemical reaction taking place [23,34,38]. The capillary action of the paper provides a passive pump to draw the Shewanella oneidensis solution and the potassium ferricyanide from their respective reservoirs, as well as store the used material outside of the system in the outlet tabs.…”

“…S. oneidensis MR-1 was prepared as previously reported [34] and was grown over a two day period on a petri dish coated with a 2. The liquid path on the paper was produced by printing hydrophobic wax, which was then briefly heated at 160 ºC to melt through to the opposite side.…”

“…Renewable energy is obtained from sources which are renewable and can be easily and quickly replenished [1][2][3][4]. The renewable resources are in many forms such as solar thermal, photovoltaics, wind, hydro, tidal/wave and bioenergy (including biomass, biogas, and biofuels).…”

“…One specific type of biorenewable technology that has a lot of potential but has yet to be widely adopted is microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology [1][2][3]. The future will require more power than is currently required and current battery technology is already pushing its limits [4].…”
