A Midrange Theory of Empowered Holistic Nursing Education: A Pedagogy for a Student-Centered Classroom

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to propose Empowered Holistic Nursing Education (EHNE) as a midrange theory--developed through induction, explication, deduction, and retroduction--to help nurse educators teach holistically and create a student-centered classroom, to establish a theoretical basis for a nursing pedagogy reflecting nursing's foundational principles, and to guide future research. “…Nurses should strive from maximum verbal and minimal nonverbal communication when interacting with patients. This is also in line with the tenets of providing holistic care, where the patients’ beliefs, values, and lifestyle choices are included in the plan of care (Love, 2014). The theory of interpersonal relations encourages nurses to look past the patient’s deficits and take into consideration what it might be like to be that patient (Barker, 1998).…”

The traditional approach to holism in nursing education emphasizes developing a supportive learning environment, encouraging instructors and students to be critical thinkers, or serving as an example of holism through holistic pedagogy (Love, 2014).…”

“…This knowledge is necessary for nursing educators to promote regular, feasible self-care practices such as these among students while in nursing school (Birtwell et al, 2019; Blanton, 2019; Martin et al, 2021). While not all nursing curricula ascribe to an identified nursing theory, a growing number realize the importance of instilling concepts of holistic nursing, particularly student-centered, integrative self-care practices guided by faculty (Love, 2014). Through mind/body interaction, stress-reduction within the individual nursing student improves ability to care for self and others (Melnyk et al, 2018).…”
