A Mineralogical Museum as a Geotourism Attraction: A Case Study

Abstract: The Zaruma-Portovelo mining district in Ecuador, and in particular, Portovelo City, is home to the oldest mining museum in the country. This museum, named Museo Mineralógico Magner Turner (MMMT in Spanish), is a centre that reflects, through its collections, the history and culture of this territory. This work aimed to evaluate the MMMT as a possible geosite by analysing its contributions to the geomining heritage of the Zaruma-Portovelo district, and thus, to enhance it and promote its collections as a geotou… Show more

“…This city is one of the 14 cantons that make up the province of El Oro, with an approximate area of 35 km 2 . The area is located on the western slope of the Andes Mountains, in the upper basin of the Puyango-Tumbes River [63,64]. Landscapes characterise the mountainous relief with steep slopes from 20 to 45 • [65].…”

“…This method has the advantage of being adaptable to particular in situ characteristics in different regions, having mixed analysis parameters (qualitative and quantitative), of defining the protection level of potential geosites and sites of geological interest [27]. Also, this method has been applied to other locations in the country [75,[118][119][120][121][122][123]. This method consists of a quantitative evaluation, considering the four criteria: scientific, educational, tourism and risk of degradation, with their respective indicators and subindicators.…”

“…Additionally, this phase includes the proposal of a georoute, evaluating the 16 sites of geological interest using the Geotouristic Routes Assessment Matrix (GtRAM) method [158]. The GtRAM method was used because it is based mainly on evaluating tourist characteristics concerning what the Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador establishes about a tourist site [121,159]. Additionally, this method has already been applied in some case studies in the country [158][159][160].…”
