A mixed-methods needs assessment of traumatic brain injury care in a low- and middle-income country setting: building neurocritical care capacity at two major hospitals in Cambodia

Abstract: OBJECTIVEThe high global burden of traumatic brain injury (TBI) disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These settings also have the greatest disparity in the availability of surgical care in general and neurosurgical care in particular. Recent focus has been placed on alleviating this surgical disparity. However, most capacity assessments are purely quantitative, and few focus on concomitantly assessing the complex healthcare system needs… Show more

“…Studies on trauma registry implementation in LMICs demonstrate an enormous range of form completion rates, ranging from 21% to 90%. [25][26][27] One study in Ethiopia at Tikur Anbessa Hospital characterized the successes and challenges of standardized trauma registry form implementation, noting that data capture rate was low, and that lack of training and supervision was a key challenge to form completion. 28 Furthermore, it is difficult to evaluate the types and quality of in-hospital services provided as the registry did not contain such information.…”

“…In addition, the Interagency Integrated Triage Tool has been tested in Papua New Guinea to improve patient triage, flow and data management for emergency presentations [ 105 ]. Multiple resource assessment tools targeted toward critical care have also been developed and piloted in low-income settings [ 36 , 38 , 41 , 43 , 68 , 70 , 84 , 106 ]. The WHO Quick Check tool designed to rapidly identify patients with severe illness in low-income settings has been evaluated in Uganda [ 46 ].…”
