A model for grain-size sorting over tidal sand ridges

Abstract: A model was developed and analyzed to quantify the effect of graded sediment on the formation of tidal sand ridges. Field data reveal coarse (fine) sediment at the crests (in the troughs), but often phase shifts between the mean grain-size distribution and the bottom topography occur. Following earlier work, this study is based on a linear stability analysis of a basic state with respect to small bottom perturbations. The basic state describes an alongshore tidal current on a coastal shelf. Sediment is transpo… Show more

“…In reality, the grain size distribution is coupled to the bed forms. Walgreen et al (2004) show that the bed forms cause a sorting of the sediment. In general however, these variations are small.…”

“…Furthermore, sediment sorting has a net stabilizing effect on the growth of sfcr, whereas their migration speed becomes larger and their wavelength is only slightly affected. Process-based models have also been developed to investigate grain sorting over other coastal bedforms, such as ripples (Foti and Blondeaux 1995), sorted bedforms on the inner shelf (Murray and Thieler 2004;Coco et al 2007a, b;Huntley et al 2008), tidal sand banks (Walgreen et al 2004;Roos et al 2007), and tidal sand waves (Roos et al 2008;Van Oyen and Blondeaux 2009); see also the review by Holland and Elmore (2008).…”
