A model for library book circulations incorporating loan periods

Abstract: A simple modification of the well-known mixed Poisson model for library circulations is proposed which takes account of the periods when a book is out on loan, and hence, unavailable for borrowing. It is found that this helps to explain the rapid tailing-off in the upper end of observed frequency-of-circulation distributions.Practical consequences of the model include the possibility of investigation of the effects of proposed changes in loan policy and more reliable prediction of future use to assist in, for … Show more

“…In spite of large natural random variability present in the data, the actual values seem to follow the forecasts very closely. Burrell and Fenton (1994) propose a mixed Poisson model for library circulation which considers the books that are in circulation and so are not available for use. Best single predictor of use is previous use.…”

“…Burrell (1980) proposes, and Hindle and Worthington (1980) discuss, simple stochastic models for library loans which explain some empirical circu-lation frequency distributions. Burrell and Fenton (1994) develop a modified model of library circulation which accounts for book unavailability for borrowing while it is out on loan. Goehlert (1978) analyzes the influence on availability by several factors, including book reshelving, search, circulation, on order, not owned, duplication, age, and subject.…”
