Introduction. Today, the act of teaching has become increasingly intricate. Multiple fields of science now aid in comprehending this complexity, enabling instructors to support learners through-out their educational journey.Aim. The main aim of this study is to determine cognitive and metacognitive thinking process of students and their teachers during a problem-solving situation.Research methodology and methods. The authors used think-aloud protocol (TAP) in which students (12 participants at the same level) were asked to verbalise their thoughts during a learning activity (math exercise and written production). Similarly, during a pedagogical intervention, nine participants with varying levels of professional experience were required to articulate their professional practices as educators. It should be noted that our approach is purely qualitative following Ericsson and Simon’s approach, from data collection step to coding system and processing of these data.Results and scientific novelty. The results showed that half of the students solved well what was asked in the problem-solving situation, contrary to the other participants who found particular difficulties in each type of situation proposed (in math and in written production). For the teachers, their verbalisations tend towards three aspects with a degree of dominance for each teacher. The authors consider hat their research is a first step towards a new approach of evaluation of the teaching-learning act that includes both the teacher and the learners simultaneously.Practical significance. The results obtained can be used by pedagogical practitioners to better understand how their learners think on the one hand and develop their professional practices on the other.

21st-century learning requires students to have the competency problem-solving and critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration and communication. However, the mathematical critical thinking skills of Indonesian junior high school students remain relatively low. Therefore, the study aims to develop a digital book STEM PjBL to foster the students’ mathematical critical thinking skills. To achieve this aim development and research of the Borg and Gall (Gall et al., 2007) model continued with the experimental research conducted using one group pre- and post-test design. Instrument tests of mathematical critical thinking skills and student perception questionnaires were employed to collect data. The findings indicate that the digital book STEM PjBL is valid and significant in fostering students’ critical thinking skills and has a positive impact on other 21st-century learning skills. Furthermore, the data shows that students are satisfied and interested in learning through active teaching and learning methods that incorporate ICT tools and STEM-PjBL aspects.

Methodologically, this review synthesizes diverse academic sources, including empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, and case analyses. By integrating a broad spectrum of research findings, it provides a holistic view of the evolving educational landscape shaped by ICT. The study adopts a critical approach, weighing the advantages against the inherent challenges of ICT in education. The main findings reveal that ICT has revolutionized educational practices by introducing innovative teaching tools and methodologies. Digital platforms and resources have facilitated a more interactive, student-centered learning environment, enhancing engagement and comprehension. Moreover, ICT has played a crucial role in democratizing education, providing greater access to learning resources and opportunities, especially in underprivileged and remote areas. This aspect of ICT aligns with global educational equity goals, aiming to bridge the digital divide and create a more inclusive educational system. The review concludes that while ICT offers substantial benefits in reshaping education, a strategic and balanced approach is necessary. This approach should focus on mitigating digital inequality, ensuring continuous professional development for educators, and fostering an environment conducive to the effective integration of ICT. Future research directions include exploring the long-term impacts of ICT in education, particularly in developing countries, and examining the sustainability of technology-driven educational models.
