A Model on the Processing of Noun-Noun Conceptual Combination and Its Verification

Abstract: In this study, a model on the processing of noun-noun conceptual combination was proposed and an experiment was conducted to verify it. The model suggests that thematic-relation interpretation can be facilitated when there are any salient external properties in the head and the modifier is relevant to one of them. On the other hand, property-mapping interpretation can be facilitated when there are any salient internal properties in the modifier and the head has any relevant slot (dimension) to one of them. “…However, there are relatively few studies on how specific types of semantic features are activated and utilized during combinations. As shown previously, Choi et al (2007) proposed that property combination entails the replacement of an intrinsic feature of the head noun with that of the modifier noun, whereas relational combination involves matching an extrinsic feature of the head noun with the entire modifier concept. For example, if “feather luggage” is interpreted as “light luggage,” (i.e., a property interpretation), this could occur through feature replacement in which the value of the shared dimension (WEIGHT dimension) of the head (i.e., “heavy” of “luggage”) is replaced with the value of the shared dimension of the modifier noun (i.e., “light” of “feather”).…”
