A modified method for corner mouth lift in scar-prone patients

Abstract: Corner mouth lift is in increasing demand among young patients in East Asia. Although various surgical methods exist for corner mouth lift, many patients are reluctant to undergo surgery due to fears of postsurgical scarring. We present a new technique aimed at reducing postoperative scarring. The technique involves triangular excision of the corner of the mouth and incision of the commissure with transposition of a lateral vermilion flap to lift the corner of the mouth. The muscle around the corner of the mou… Show more

“…Nowadays, to lift or rejuvenate oral commissures both surgical techniques (eg, Z-plasty, 19 lentiform excision, 20 triangular excision, 21 a triangular excision combined with a subnasal lift; 22 or more extended methods, eg, a combination of an incision with DAO transection 6 , 22 , 23 ) and nonsurgical techniques (eg, injecting botulinum toxin [Botox, Allergan, Irvine, CA], fillers or a combination of these 24 ) have been described in the literature. Perkins et al provided an overview of the indications and (dis)advantages of surgical mouth corner lifting procedures.…”

“…Surgical procedures (facelift and less invasive alternatives such as absorbable barbed sutures producing a lifting action) and nonsurgical rejuvenation procedures (neuromodulator and filler injections) are the main options in the management of facial aging that involve the cheeks, eyebrows, mandibular area, and neck. 1,[4][5][6][7][8] Although it offers a permanent and clear outcome, the facelift is a complicated procedure that takes a long time to recover from, along with the fear of postoperative scarring, 5,7 while nonsurgical rejuvenation procedures are associated with temporary or limited efficacy. 4,6,7 Nonetheless, patients between 30 and 50 years of age, with aging signs limited to malar and nasolabial segments of the midcheek and the neck, do not yet require major interventions for aging signs in other areas of the face and therefore seek less complicated options such as day surgeries.…”

[8][9][10] For such patients, the use of the SMAS flap is found to be effective for the enhancement of the neck, jowls, and midface and does not require hospitalization.…”
