A Modified Strange Situation Procedure for Use in Assessing Sibling Relationships and their Attachment to Carers

Abstract: Steve Farnfield describes a modification of the Strange Situation Procedure (SSP), commonly used in the assessment of infant and pre-school children's attachment, for use in the assessment of sibling relationships. The modified SSP was developed for use in cases where social workers had to decide whether or not to split up groups of siblings for placement in adoptive or long-term foster homes. “…Adoption services apply two different methods for assessing children's attachment: behavioural observations and narrative tasks. The first include modified Strange Situation Procedure (Farnfield, 2009;Pace and Zavattini, 2011) and Attachment Q-Set (Verissimo and Salvaterra, 2006) used for infants and pre-school children, while the latter comprises story-stem battery (Kaniuk, Steele and Hodges, 2004;Roman, et al, 2012) and completion task (Barone and Lionetti, 2012;Pace, Zavattini and D'Alessio, 2012) that have been shown to be particularly adept at capturing the inner world of pre-school and school-aged adopted children.…”

“…Siblings can be defined as children who are biologically related or have lived together for a significant period as in the case of a stepsibling. The sibling relationship exists within the family system, thus functioning in connection with the caregiving system and the spousal relationship (Farnfield, 2009), making it problematic to study in isolation.…”
