A Modified Temporal Incision: An Alternative Approach to the Zygomatic Arch

Abstract: Zygomatic arch fractures occur due to a direct injury to the lateral aspect of the head. When there are multiple fractures of the arch, open reduction and internal fixation is indicated. Conventionally hemi-coronal and preauricular incisions are placed to approach the arch. A modified temporal incision has been described. Open reduction and internal fixation of zygomatic arch fractures has been done.

“…The superimposition of the anatomic structures located at the site of the infratemporal, temporal, and pterygopalatine fossa may disorient the diagnosis in the case, hence to determine the precise and detailed location of the dislodged tooth computed tomography examination is needed. “…This bone is formed by the temporal process of the zygomatic bone (anterior two-thirds) and the zygomatic process of the temporal bone (posterior one-third). In addition, the posterior end of the zygomatic arch is attached to the squamous part of the temporal bone by anterior and posterior roots [ 6 7 ].…”

“…In particular, for comminuted malar fractures of the zygomatic arch, rigid internal fixation is often required. For complete access to the entire horizontal arc of the zygomatic arch, a bicoronal approach, preauricular approach, modified temporal incision, or an endoscopic temporal approach can be used [ 2 6 10 11 12 ]. Fixation of the arch to the temporal bone also allows for accurate reduction through these approaches [ 4 ].…”
