The different behavior of fluid density and viscosity in going from the dilute gas to the dense fluid state gives rise to kinematic viscosities which, in the near supercritical region, are lower than for liquid metals. As a consequence, the relative importance of natural convection (as measured by the ratio of buyoant to inertial forces) is two orders of magnitude higher in a supercritical fluid (at constant Reynolds number) than in normal liquids.Binary diffusion coefficients of nonvolatile solutes in supercritical fluids were measured with a technique that involved laminar flow and diffusion in a rectangular channel. The solution to this hydrodynamic problem is presented. By varying the inclination of the solute source plane with respect to the horizontal position, apparent diffusion coefficients were measured that were up to six times higher than the “true” coefficients.Experimental binary diffusion coefficients, including published literature data, were analyzed in the light of hydrodynamic (Stokes‐Einstein) theory. The analysis suggests that under the high‐density, low‐viscosity conditions that characterize supercritical fluids, hydrodynamic behavior at the molecular level is approached, and can be used as a basis for data extrapolation.

Abstract:In this work, we present the predicted multiphase behavior (vapor-liquid, liquid-liquid, and vapor-liquid-liquid equilibria) for a quaternary mixture containing methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and water. The capabilities of the PR (Peng-Robinson) and PC-SAFT (Perturbed-Chain Statistical Associating Fluid Theory) equations of state (EoS) to predict the phase behavior exhibited by this mixture were compared and analyzed. The computer algorithm used for isothermal multiphase flash calculations is based on the minimization of the Gibbs energy along with stability analysis to find the most stable state of the system. The binary interaction parameters used with the PR EoS for modeling this system were taken from the literature whereas the interaction parameters for the PC-SAFT were obtained from the regression of binary vapor-liquid equilibrium data. The results obtained differ from each other and demonstrate different capabilities and accuracies of the present thermodynamic models in the predictions.

Progress in hydrate thermodynamic study necessitates robust and fast models to be incorporated in reservoir simulation softwares. However, numerous models presented in the literature makes selection of the best, proper predictive model a cumbersome task. It is of industrial interest to make use of cubic equations of state (EOS) for modeling hydrate equilibria. In this regard, this study focuses on evaluation of three common EOSs including Peng-Robinson, Soave-Redlich-Kwong and Valderrama-Patel-Teja coupled with van der Waals and Platteeuw theory to predict hydrate P-T equilibrium of a real natural gas sample. Each EOS was accompanied with three mixing rules, including van der Waals (vdW), Avlonitis non-density dependent (ANDD) and general nonquadratic (GNQ). The prediction of cubic EOSs was in sufficient agreement with experimental data and with overall AARD% of less than unity. In addition, PR plus ANDD proved to be the most accurate model in this study for prediction of hydrate equilibria with AARD% of 0.166. It was observed that the accuracy of cubic EOSs studied in this paper depends on mixing rule coupled with them, especially at high-pressure conditions. Lastly, the present study does not include any adjustable parameter to be correlated with hydrate phase equilibrium data.
