A Modified Vegetation Photosynthesis and Respiration Model (VPRM) for the Eastern USA and Canada, Evaluated With Comparison to Atmospheric Observations and Other Biospheric Models

Abstract: Atmospheric CO2 measurements from a dense surface network can help to evaluate terrestrial biosphere model (TBM) simulations of Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) with two key benefits. First, gridded CO2 flux estimates can be evaluated over regional scales, not possible using flux tower observations at discrete locations for model evaluation. Second, TBM ability to explain atmospheric CO2 fluctuations due to the biosphere can be directly tested, an important objective for anthropogenic emissions monitoring using at… Show more

“…Recently an improved terrestrial respiration parameterization in VPRM has been developed by incorporating EVI, water stress scaling factor (Wscale) and its interactions with temperature to capture soil moisture effects, and a quadratic dependence on surface air temperature (T in °C) (Gourdji et al., 2020; Gourdji et al., 2021): ER=β+α1T+α2T2+γEVI+k1Wscale+k2WscaleT+k3WscaleT2 …”

“…Local surface fluxes and their response to frontal weather may contribute to the size of the contrast if such response is large enough (Chan et al., 2004). In winter, much of the biosphere is inert, and hence respiration dominates NEE, which is less spatially diverse over CONUS in winter (Gourdji et al., 2022; Hu et al., 2020). However, in the summer, normalCnormalO2 ${\mathrm{C}\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ is depleted over productive regions in the boundary layer and, to a lesser extent, the total column.…”

“…The biosphere acts both as a source (via respiration) and a sink (via photosynthesis) of CO 2 , and because of its potential significance to understanding urban CO 2 , a number of previous studies have emphasized the biosphere and the role it plays. Previous representations of urban domains, including via isotopic measurements (Miller et al., 2020) and tower observations coupled with emission inventories (Sargent et al., 2018) have suggested that the biosphere is a substantial contributor to observed CO 2 in urban domains (Gourdji et al., 2022; Hardiman et al., 2017; Karion et al., 2021). These results have particular pertinence for the expanding networks of urban tower observations in the US, including Los Angeles (Kort et al., 2013; Yadav et al., 2021), the Northeast Corridor (Karion et al., 2020), Indianapolis (Turnbull et al., 2019), Boston (Sargent et al., 2018), and Salt Lake City (McKain et al., 2012).…”
