A Moving-Slider MEMS Actuator for High-Bandwidth HDD Tracking

Abstract: A moving-slider microactuator for high track pitch HDDs was investigated. A new microactuator design called a bipolar microactuator that enables both high stroke and good linearity was proposed. For easier assembly, a new microactuator fabrication technique was developed that enables the bonding pads on the sidewall of the microactuator chip. The microactuator was assembled into a server-class HDD, and a servo bandwidth of 8 kHz was demonstrated with an 80-kHz sampling rate.Index Terms-Bipolar actuator, high-b… Show more

“…In the dualstage actuation servo systems, the VCM actuator is used as the primary stage to provide long track seeking, but with poor accuracy and slow response time, while the secondary stage actuator is used to provide higher precision and faster response, but with a stroke limit. To date, there are mainly two types of secondary actuators for high servo bandwidth: 1) actuated suspension type [3] and 2) slider-driven type [4], [5]. For the slider-driven type, the microactuator is attached to the slider and moves the slider relatively to the suspension.…”

“…Electrostatic micro-actuator for HDD tracking servo has been shown which is controller by electrostatic force [2]. A Moving-Slider MEMS Actuator for High-Bandwidth HDD Tracking with servo bandwidth of 8 kHz was demonstrated with an 80-kHz sampling rate has been discussed in [10]. Thus we can see that MEMS technologies will benefit HDD actuator technology in an immense way.…”

“…We used high-aspect ratio (20:1), thick metal (up to 40 micron) fabrication technique developed in our lab [4]. Figure 9 shows frequency response of this microactuator (input: drive voltage, output: motion of the read/write element).…”

“…This requires tighter control of recording head positioning over data bits on a disk, in both horizontal (off-track) and vertical (disk/head spacing) directions. A lot of MEMS devices have been investigated, developed, and some have been already used in HDDs, such as tracking control actuator [1][2][3][4] and fly-height control actuator [5,6]. In this paper, we present two new MEMS device examples: "gimbal chip" and "gimbal-integrated tracking microactuator".…”
