A multi-diagnostic spectral analysis of penumbral microjets

Abstract: Context. Penumbral microjets (PMJs) are short-lived, jet-like objects found in the penumbra of sunspots. They were first discovered in chromospheric lines and have later also been shown to exhibit signals in transition region (TR) lines. Their origin and manner of evolution is not yet settled. Aims. We perform a comprehensive analysis of PMJs through the use of spectral diagnostics that span from photospheric to TR temperatures to constrain PMJ properties. Methods We employed high-spatial-resolution Swedish 1-… Show more

“…Furthermore, clear PMJ detections are mostly found in the inner penumbra, where we find fewer PEBs as compared to the outer penumbra. Recently, Buehler et al (2019) and Drews & Rouppe van der Voort (2020) connected Ca ii 8542 Å PMJs with dark fibrilar structures close to the line core in Hα. The connection between PEBs and PMJs warrants further study and requires simultaneous observations of multiple spectral lines and extreme high temporal evolution to resolve the onset of PMJs (Rouppe van der Voort & Drews 2019).…”

“…The Ca ii 8542 Å spectra were not included in our analysis. This data were earlier analyzed by Drews & Rouppe van der Voort (2020) to study penumbral micro jets, and the co-aligned SST and IRIS data were publicly released as described by Rouppe van der .…”

“…Since the follow-up studies have not identified any significant Doppler velocities within these structures (see e.g. Reardon et al 2013;Drews & Rouppe van der Voort 2017;Esteban Pozuelo et al 2019;Drews & Rouppe van der Voort 2020), the second scenario is now favoured. However, the propagation of these events is still not evident due to the lack of knowledge of the magnetic field at atmospheric layers above the photosphere.…”
