A Multi-Dimensional Configuration Algorithm for Modular Product Architectures

Abstract: With an increasing demand for product individualisation leading to increased product architecture complexity and -costs, modular kits are one common measure to cope with this issue. The management of such a modular kit as well as the methodical determination of a specific product variant is key to the manufacturer's success. As multiple influence factors need to be taken into account when configuring product variants, we propose a multi-dimensional geometric optimisation algorithm, allowing for prioritising va… Show more

“…For pure product architectures, such approaches already exist as presented in [36,43]. This performance simulation approach brings both customer-and company perspectives together in order to create one individual multi-dimensional performance criterion for each available alternative as described in [44].…”

“…In general, every company and every MPA need to be analysed considering different aspects. These individual aspects can then be combined using a multi-dimensional Hyperspace algorithm, which basically expresses MPA alternatives as geometric areas in a multi-dimensional spatial area [Sei20]. By integrating and minimizing these spatial areas, the most performant MPA alternative can be identified [Sei20].…”

By integrating and minimizing these spatial areas, the most performant MPA alternative can be identified [Sei20]. This leads to the final step, providing an objective performance index for the modularization team when deciding about which MPA alternative to implement.…”

“…Following the well-known definition after Ulrich, the product architecture is the scheme in which the products' functions are allocated to physical components. It can be defined as the arrangement of functional elements, the mapping from functional to physical elements and the specification of the interfaces among the components (Ulrich, 1995). Ulrich defines that a modular architecture exhibits a one-toone mapping from functional elements to physical components and that integral architecture exhibit complex mappings.…”
