A Multi-GCM Assessment of the Climate Change Impact on the Hydrology and Hydropower Potential of a Semi-Arid Basin (A Case Study of the Dez Dam Basin, Iran)

Abstract: In this paper, the impact of climate change on the climate and discharge of the Dez Dam Basin and the hydropower potential of two hydropower plants (Bakhtiari and Dez) is investigated based on the downscaled outputs of six GCMs (General Circulation Models) and three SRES (Special Report on Emission Scenarios) scenarios for the early, mid and late 21st century. Projections of all the scenarios and GCMs revealed a significant rise in temperature (up to 4.9 °C) and slight to moderate variation in precipitation (u… Show more

“…The climate change impact on hydro-climatology and the potential of hydropower generation in the Dez Dam Basin in Iran was also investigated [15]. The results showed a remarkable reduction of up to 33% in future streamflows.…”

“…Furthermore, significant climate anomalies have been observed within Iran, a country distinguished mainly by arid and semi-arid climates [43]. Evaluations of the impact of climate change on river flow in Iran reveal significant disparities in surface water resources across various regions of the country [44]. Simulation studies focusing on streamflow in the northern regions of Iran, utilizing climatic projections derived from different SRES scenarios, have indicated contrasting trends.…”

“… 9 , 10 , 11 Streamflow variability across the major global river basins is projected to change because of a warming climate. 12 , 13 Hydropower is susceptible to a warming climate 14 , 15 because of changes in reservoir storage and streamflow. 16 Thus, climate change can significantly alter the global hydropower generation capacity.…”
