A Multi-Thresholding Method Based on Otsu’s Algorithm for the Detection of Concealed Threats in Passive Millimeter-Wave Images

Abstract: In this study, an algorithm to the detection and imaging of hidden arms for passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) imaging systems is proposed. This technique is; in fact, an improved version of our previously developed auto-classification algorithm by extending it by exploiting the Otsu’s multi-level thresholding method. The detailed derivation and the brief steps of the proposed algorithm are given. The proposed algorithm is tested and validated by real PMMW images obtained by a real radiometric imaging system. “…This method is mostly preferred for picture data in RGB format. For this reason, focused SAR data must first be converted into RGB image format and then processed into a suitable format such as HSV for OTSU filtering by additional processing (Işıker and Özdemir, 2019). However, this process adds additional cost and the success of the filter depends on the resolution of the SAR image.…”

“…Although OTSU method is an effective method in image processing, it is mostly used in Hough-Saturation-Value (HSV) regions of (Red, Green, and Blue) RGB images (Sabancı et al2018). In many radar imaging applications where the OTSU method was used, the operations were executed through the RGB image files (Işıker and Özdemir, 2019;Işıker et al, 2018;Işıker et al, 2015;Khoukhi et al2019;Lu and Hu 2012). However, converting SAR data into image files and then filtering these files again with image processing causes high computation time and data loss.…”

“…With the unique advantage of penetrating most materials, except for metal and water, millimeter wave imaging systems have been employed for concealed target visualization without privacy concerns [1]. Different from active modes, the millimeter sensor usually relies on its strong penetrability, and targets can be identified through their naturally emitted and reflected radiations, detected by using a Passive Millimeter Wave imaging system [2][3][4][5][6]. This leads to less damage to human health and is more suitable for the application of security at airports, subway stations, railway stations, conference places, etc.…”
