A multi-trait characterization of the ‘Friariello’ landrace: a Mediterranean resource for sweet pepper breeding

Abstract: Landraces are an important resource for crop breeding, due to their resilience and content of quality traits. However, genetic and phenotypic variability needs to be carefully characterized for proper direct and indirect use. In the present study, a multidisciplinary approach was carried out to assess the Italian sweet pepper landrace ‘Friariello’. A total of 18 traditional accessions were compared with five hybrids and two ecotypes with similar fruit typology. Genetic and morpho-agronomic characterization all… Show more

“…In Italy, the variability of pedoclimatic and cultivation conditions has favored the selection of a large amount of pepper cultivars and local landraces, which represent a valuable, unexploited resource . The use of this germplasm has increased in the past decade as a result of efforts aiming to enhance the ‘on farm’ cultivation, as well as those of European institutions, which promote a sustainable use of genetic resources and assign protection marks: PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographic Indication).…”
