A Multicomponent Intervention to Train and Support Family Medicine Providers to Promote Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for Adolescent Girls and Young Women in the Deep South: Protocol for the PrEP-Pro Study

Abstract: Background Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective biomedical prevention intervention and a major strategy for reducing the HIV burden in the United States. However, PrEP provision and uptake remain lower than estimated needs, and in ways that may exacerbate HIV disparities among Black adolescent girls and young women in the southern United States. Data suggest that gaps in provider knowledge of HIV epidemiology and PrEP and skills assessing sexual health practices are important barri… Show more

“…In addition, provider-focused strategies may include the following: improving providers' comfort discussing sexual health using a normative, sex-positive lens, enhanced sexual history taking skills, and increasing understanding of HIV epidemiology and knowledge about adolescent relationships (e.g., sexual concurrency, serial monogamy, and sexual networks, especially among Black AGYW) to accurately evaluate AGYW behaviors 8 . Our team is currently working on PrEP implementation among Alabama family medicine residency training programs 22 . Even though many of the strategies presented here were suggested by providers, it is important to acknowledge study recruitment occurred during COVID-19, potentially creating a selection bias toward providers who were interested in/had time to participate and clients with an interest in sexual health.…”

In addition, even though thematic saturation was achieved during the respective components of this study, the small sample size limits generalizability.…”
