A Multidomain Intervention for Modifying Lifestyle Habits Reduces the Dementia Risk in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Single-Blinded Randomized Controlled Pilot Study

Abstract: We aimed to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of a multidomain intervention including intensive and maintenance programs for reducing the risk of dementia in at-risk older adults. Community-dwelling older adults (aged ≥60 years) without dementia but having several risk factors for dementia (N = 32; 89% female; mean age ± standard deviation, 76.8 ± 4.7 years) were assigned to three parallel programs: intensive plus maintenance (INT+MNT), intensive only (INTonly), and active control. Subjects in INT+MNT … Show more

“…Park et al. (2019) reported that the baseline ANU‐ADRI risk score for the active control group was 17.6 (7.7) and the protective factor score was −8.3 (3.2). In a study examining the effect of an intervention study to prevent cognitive behaviours conducted in Finland, ANU‐ADRI risk, protective and total scores were found to be 14.8 (8.2), −8.9 (2.6) and 5.9 (8.7), respectively, in the control group at baseline (Hall et al., 2024).…”

“…Furthermore, each additional risk point on the ANU-ADRI was associated with an 8% increase in the risk of developing MCI/dementia over a 12-year follow-up (Cherbuin et al, 2019). The ANU-ADRI has also been used in studies to evaluate the efficacy of interventions to reduce lifestyle risk factors for AD (McMaster et al, 2018(McMaster et al, , 2020Park et al, 2019), and it has been shown to be a valid and reliable tool in randomised…”

“…Therefore, the results suggest the effectiveness of MDSCEP for the improvement of healthy behaviours in older Iranian's lifestyle. Previous studies in other populations have shown that educational interventions based on Pender's HPM for older adults can be effective for lifestyle changes, including awareness and promotion of self‐care activities, and improvements in mental and physical health (Ilgaz & Gözüm, 2019; Park et al, 2019). This study demonstrates the program's effectiveness with Iranian community‐based older adults.…”

“…The ANU-ADRI was used as a surrogate outcome measure in a multidomain risk reduction trial of middle-aged adults because it was not reasonable to expect significant cognitive change over 6 months in this age-group ( 71 ). It was also used as an outcome measure in a pilot multidomain dementia risk reduction trial in older community dwelling adults ( 72 ) and a multidomain trial in middle-aged adults in primary care ( 73 ). The ANU-ADRI was used as a secondary outcome in a multi-domain trial for participants with subjective cognitive decline or MCI ( 74 ) and in an ongoing large primary prevention internet based trial ( 75 ).…”
