A Multimodal Localization Framework Design for IoT Applications

Abstract: Multiple Radio Access Technology (multi-RAT) communication with Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) significantly increases the flexibility of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Location-based services that build upon such a multimodal communication architecture are able to switch to an optimal localization method depending on the constraints of the active wireless technology. Furthermore, the resulting location estimate can aid location-based handover mechanisms to reduce the energy consumption of a mult… Show more

“…In this section, we elaborate on the opportunities of combining LPWAN, GNSS and LEO technologies into a single solution, aiming to achieve a better overall positioning performance. A summary is shown in Figure 18 method, depending on the context and constraints of the active wireless technology, as demonstrated in [79]. For example, a UE is accurately located on a construction site using TDoA in a private LoRa network, while during transport, RSS-based localization in a public Sigfox network is used to save energy.…”

“…In [20], a localization approach for devices with single-chip multi-RAT implementation was proposed. The advantage is that the cost of the devices is not increased significantly.…”

“…This was made possible by the continuously declining price of electronics and ICs (integrated circuits) and by the apparition on the market of low-cost sensors, that can be used in portable or energy-constrained devices [29]. Another supporting element is the IoT vision that is gaining increased attention nowadays, smart cities seeming to be some of its prime beneficiaries, besides domains such as agriculture, energy, and localization [1,2,30,40,46]. Although the research works are diverse, almost all of them advocate the deployment of dense, high resolution monitoring systems for the assessment of ambient parameters within urban areas.…”
